Green Steel Transition Accelerates the Construction of Next-Generation Pickling Lines
As the global steel industry accelerates its transition toward low-carbon production and sustainable manufacturing, pickling technology is entering a new stage of development. As a critical process in flat steel production, pickling removes oxide scale from hot-rolled steel and prepares the strip for downstream processes such as cold rolling, galvanizing, coating, and finishing. The quality of the pickling process has a direct impact on the surface quality and performance of finished steel products, making modern pickling lines an essential investment for steel producers.
One of the most significant developments in recent years has been the adoption of Acid Regeneration Plants (ARP). These systems recover and regenerate spent hydrochloric acid from the pickling process, allowing it to be reused instead of discarded. This closed-loop approach reduces chemical consumption, minimizes waste generation, lowers transportation requirements, and improves overall resource efficiency.
A notable example is Tata Steel's new pickling line project at Port Talbot in the United Kingdom. The project includes a state-of-the-art acid regeneration plant supplied by ANDRITZ, designed to support higher production capacity while meeting stringent environmental standards. By regenerating waste acid on site, the system significantly reduces fresh acid imports, decreases waste liquid disposal, and contributes to the decarbonization of pickling operations. Advanced automation, process control, exhaust gas cleaning, and energy-saving functions are also integrated into the project.
In addition to environmental improvements, digitalization is reshaping modern pickling lines. PLC-based automation, Human-Machine Interfaces (HMI), online inspection systems, automatic acid concentration control, intelligent tension control, and real-time process monitoring enable higher production efficiency, consistent product quality, and improved operational reliability.
Growing demand for hot-rolled pickled steel, advanced high-strength steel, electrical steel, automotive sheet, and premium appliance steel is further driving investment in next-generation pickling facilities. Steel manufacturers are increasingly adopting environmentally friendly and highly automated production lines to meet stricter quality standards while reducing operating costs and environmental impact.
Looking ahead, next-generation pickling lines will continue to integrate sustainable technologies, intelligent automation, and digital management systems. These innovations will help steel producers improve efficiency, reduce emissions, optimize resource utilization, and support the global transition toward greener and more sustainable steel manufacturing.
