Thailand's steel cold rolling mills to face higher costs due to electricity price hikes next year
Earlier, Malaysia just announced that it would increase the electricity surcharge by more than 400% from January to June next year. Malaysian steel producers called on the government to implement a gradual electricity tariff.
Recently, Thailand's Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) also announced that it will increase electricity prices for non-household entities by 20.5% from January to April next year to 5.69 baht per unit in order to help the country’s state-run power generation bureau reduce losses.
Thai steel cold rolling mills in Thailand will face higher pressure on electricity costs next year. According to sources, the melting cost of electric arc furnace steel mills in Thailand will increase by about 1,000 baht per ton, while Thai rolling mills will face additional costs of about 300 baht per ton.
Affected industries have asked Thai authorities to form a joint committee of state and private sector representatives to find ways to address their concerns.
